OKR Model

Let’s explore in this post the Objective and Key Results model

Intro

The OKR Model

Firsty, OKR is an agile methodology for collaborative goal setting practice. Secondly, the OKR is a model: it stands for “Objectives and Key Results”. We will dive into this model today.

Objectives are an ambitious qualitative description of what you want to achieve. In other words, the goal is where you want to go.

Discover how to create and manage Objectives in Rising Goal.

Key Results are a quantitative measure of your progress towards this goal. Therefore, this is how we will achieve the goal.

Typically, you have 3-5 key results per objective. But, it is a common mistake to have too many key results.

Creating Alignement

Certainly, one of the benefits you seek with this goal-settings approach is to focus. You are looking to focus the efforts on the priority objectives throughout the organization.

You have two ways to align goals across the company:

  • firstly, you can cascade OKRs from the top, starting with the top-level OKRs
  • secondly, you can ladder OKRs from the bottom, pushed by the teams. Laddered OKRs should fit within the mission & direction of the organization

As a result, in a agile organization, you should have a good mix of both approaches.  For instance, best practices are cascading a maximum of 40-50% OKRs.
